Watching an Italian movie in Holland is kind of weird. The Dutch subtitles are annoying when they speak Italian and confusing in the brief pieces when they speak French.

About the movie: I had already read the book so it was no surprise plot-wise, but Nanni Moretti’s interpretation is very good.
Surprisingly enough the soundtrack is very nice, which is uncommon for Italian movies, unfortunately.

There’s a strong and explicit sex scene at a certain point, which in the film it’s a little bit “alone”, while in the book it’s better contextualized.
All in all Caos Calmo it’s a good movie, with probably some slow moments that are meaningful in the overall story though.

Unlike other times no noisy late Dutch people with beers and coffee cups coming in when the movie already started, laughing and talking loud. Hurray!

Yesterday evening I went to The Movies, the cinema close to home, to see “Transamerica”.
It’s very funny but also, if you manage to go under the surface, very deep, since it touches topics like transgenderism, youth prostitution and sex identity.

The protagonist, Felicity Huffman (yes, the desperate housewife), is absolutely perfect in the part. Her facial features are squared and strong like those of a man, and the voice is great. She has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in 2006.

Also the mother is wonderful and very American, while the father (the actor who was Pauly in Rocky) has an insignificant role.

The only negative aspect is the happy ending, but you can’t expect too much from a US movie, can you?

Anyway I strongly recommend this movie, it’s worth with no doubt the price of a DVD rent :)

Last night I’ve been to see “In Bruges”, with Colin Farrell.
It’s quite a strange movie, trying to mix comedy and noir. Colin Farrell’s character is very funny and he is very good in the part of a stoned dubliner, with a strong southern Irish accent, who does not appreciate the nice city of Bruges.

Ralph Fiennes is good as well, especially on the phone :)

The movie not always manages to keep the attention high, but I enjoyed it and some scenes and wisecracks will remain in my head for a long time.

Not a masterpiece but a good movie. And also made me wanting to go to Bruges. Maybe I’ll go there one of the next weekends!

That’s a brilliant book!

Funny and clever, extremely well written and with wonderful characters. The father is hilarious and the Ukraenglish language made me crack up several times. I definitely recommend it!

It’s a good book, I liked it and also recognized myself (and some friends) in the situations.

The problem is it reminded me too much Jpod, by Douglas Coupland, which is totally better.

I think it’s worth a read anyway, but don’t expect a masterpiece.

THat’s a scary movie if you are an Italian (as I am).

The director tries to use some Tarantino’s shots and a sometimes exaggerated acting, mainly by the main character (a great actor btw), but at the end the film is absolutely serious and you realize that politicians in Italy are hopless.

If you are an Italian and live abroad go and watch it. If you still live in Italy, well, it’s up to you, but it will be even more difficult than it is now to stay there.

And don’t tell me I didn’t advise you!

The best part of the show is the 45 minutes video-interview to Bacon. He is totally crazy :)
His style is very different in the different stages of his life/career. Personally I prefer the last part, which is less dark and more experimental.

With all that rain yesterday there was really nothing else to do other than watching Tv or going to the cinema.
I went for the 2nd one (after getting tired of the 1st one…). The chosen movie was “There will be blood”.
Antonella and I incredibly managed to arrive on time, after a long walk under the annoying Dutch rain.
To be honest there’s not point at arriving early at the cinema in Amsterdam, because everybidy arrives at the last moment or even late and you’re forced to stand to let other people pass. I hate that!

Comingt to the movie: I liked it a lot. Daniel Day Lewis is great and luckily his English was clearly comprehensible. A couple of week ago I’ve to see “No country for old men” (great film btw) and Tommy Lee Jones was almost not understandable at all, with that fucking Texan accent and his continuous moaning.

Top moment: when the main character (Lewis) forces the priest to shout “I’m a false prophet and god is a superstition”. AMAZING :)

L’altra sera, non essendci come al solito nulla di sensato da guardare in tv, ho noleggiato il dvd del film “La ricerca della felicità”, l’avventura americana di Gabriele Muccino.

Come mi aspettavo Muccino ha continuato a portare avanti la corrente cinematografica di cui è l’esponente di punta in Italia, il paraculismo.
Ovviamente gli USA sono la vera patria di questa corrente “artistica” e quindi Muccino non ha trovato alcuna difficoltà.

Il manifesto del paraculismo è notoriamente “L’ultimo bacio”: quale trentenne o giù di lì non si è immedesimato nel personaggio di Accorsi (capelli cotonati a parte)?
In questo film il paraculismo raggiunge il proprio apice, perchè oltre che puntare sulla “pancia” dello spettatore si colpisce anche sotto la cintura (leggi: Martina Stella gatta morta).

In “La ricerca della felicità” si batte invece il chiodo ragazzo padre, di colore, povero, non più giovane. Non è dato sapere se fosse anche ebreo, pare non fosse omosessuale, ma probabilmente Muccino l’ha fatto per avere qualcosa da utilizzare anche per il prossimo film.

Will Smith comunque è bravo e regge bene il ruolo. E il bambino è così carino… :)

Sì, è vero, è un po’ un filmetto hollywoodiano senza pretese… però Maryl Streep è meravigliosa, e anche l’assistente.
Alcune espressioni sono da cineteca :)

L’ho dovuto guardare in inglese per problemi con dvd sul pc e devo dire che si capisce bene, anche se la Close bisbiglia spesso.
L’audio non era un gran che perchè ho scoperto, anche se potevo arrivarci anche prima, che lo sdoppiatore per le cuffie è una bufala, perchè da ogni cuffia senti da un auricolare solo…

Sicko, l’ultimo film di Michael Moore, è sicuramente da vedere.
Certo il regista gigioneggia come al solito, esagera, mette le cose come pare a lui, fa un uso smodato della retorica, ma certe immagini e certi dati non mentono.

Credo che per un americano l’effetto sia 10 volte amplificato e che l’ironia che a noi fa sorridere spesso durante il film diventi per chi quelle cose le deve subire sul serio un riso molto amaro.

Certo la Francia, il Canada e la Gran Bretagna non sono quel “paradiso sanitario” che viene fuori dalle immagini di Sicko, dove gli assistenti sanitari vengono a casa tua alle 2 di notte sorridenti e quando esci dall’ospedale ti danno i soldi per il taxi, ma di certo se negli USA ti viene qualcosa più di un raffreddore hai di che preoccuparti.

Che paese l’America…

Sabato sono stato a vedere “4 mesi 3 settimane 2 giorni”, film romeno vincitore della Palma d’oro a Cannes.

Recensione: un pugno nello stomaco, bello forte.
Sconsigliato a chi vuole passare una serata spensierata al cinema e/o a chi è incinta.
Il tema dell’aborto viene affrontato senza la minima retorica, anzi, con una fotografia cruda ed essenziale ed una recitazione molto “dell’est”.

L’assenza totale di colonna sonora rende ancora più essenziale e coinvolgente il film.
Non stupitevi se quelli che escono dallo spettacolo prima del vostro sono pallidi e con quell’espressione un po’ così, che abbiamo noi che abbiamo visto Genova Ceauşescu…

Comunque da vedere!
